New CEO Appointed!

Kia ora koutou

On behalf of the Manaia Health PHO Board  I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Donovan Clarke (Ngati Hine, Waikato-Tainui) as our new CEO.  Donovan is excited about joining Manaia Health PHO as Chief Executive and we are just as excited he is coming home to Northland.

In 2008, Donovan left the NZ Police at the rank of Inspector, entering the health sector as a senior executive in Disability Support Services at Taikura Trust. The lessons and leadership he gained in his years in the NZ Police were quickly applied across this demanding sector.  In 2011 he became the Executive Director Māori Health at Southern DHB where he helped transform health services to high needs populations including Māori.  During this period he completed a MBA at Otago University.  Most recently he has been Chief Advisor Māori, Families Commission, Wellington.  Donovan holds directorships on Te Putahitanga o Te Waipounamu, Whānau Ora Commissioning Agency and Te Rau Matatini, National Māori Mental Health and Addictions Workforce where he is the Chair of their Audit and Risk Committee. His breadth of knowledge across the entire health and social care sector is going to be a great gain for all of us in Northland.

Donovan says "The health sector is faced with some significant challenges and with my background in law, social services and health I'm looking forward to leading change across the primary care sector. Addressing health inequalities across Northland will be a priority, we must meet the health needs of our entire community. We need to get this right and work together to improve the health status of everyone living across Northland". I entirely agree with this and look forward to Donovan's arrival in mid-September.

A formal welcome to Northland and the PHO will be held at 10am, Friday 16 September at Pehiaweri Marae.

I would like to acknowledge the support of Mary Carthew as Interim Chief Executive - this arrangement will continue until Donovan commences his role at Manaia Health PHO.
